It wasn’t unusual for Kevin Mears to come home and find he had company in his penthouse in New Jersey. After returning from his trip to London for Madness, he heard the TV on as he approached the door. Sliding his keycard through the slot, he let himself in and there was his sister, Amanda, sat on the couch with the remote in her hand.
Ever since he helped her deal with her abusive ex-boyfriend, he made sure to give her a key so she could come and stay anytime she needed. It was important to him that Amanda had a safe place to go, just in case the shithead tried to come see her again. Kevin waved to her as he headed inside, pulling his rolling bag behind him with a yawn.
“Hey, Amanda. Everything good?” He asked, and it was clear he was worn down, thanks to the jet lag that comes with traveling across the world.
“Yeah, I wanted to come see you but forgot you had a show today. So I thought I’d just hang out and wait till you got home.” She answered as she was browsing reality TV shows on Discovery Plus. “You look like the walking dead.”
“Good to see you too.” He answered with a roll of his eyes. “You hop back and forth across the Atlantic twice in a week, you’ll feel like I do too. Listen, try to keep it down. I’m gonna go to bed and try to sleep this off.”
“Got a minute to talk first?” She asked hopefully before getting up to follow him as he hadn’t stopped moving towards his bedroom. Kevin shoved the bag against the wall before taking a seat on his bed.
“Yeah, make it quick.”
“I’ve just noticed that you’ve been quiet on social media, which isn’t like you. Something going on?”
“Nothing wrong. I’ve just been doing a lot more media since I won the Uprising World title. I’ve been doing podcasts and radio shows and YouTube shows, all that shit. And between that and training, I’ve just not had much interest at the moment in using that shithole app too. Everything’s fine.” He told her as he was untying his shoes. “Which reminds me I got a call-in spot to do later this week in Reno.”
Amanda nodded her head as she leaned against the doorway. “Just making sure you didn’t get hacked or anything.” She got quiet for a second before continuing. “Talked with mom this morning.”
“Great. What was on her mind?” Kevin asked. He’d always had a very strained relationship with his family, outside of his sister. They hadn’t been the most supportive of his career choices in life, and his mother had even told him at one point that when he grew up and got a real job, she’d talk with him again. They hadn’t spoken since.
“She wanted to know what plans I had for Thanksgiving this year. See if I wanted to head to Connecticut for it.” Amanda answered. “I told her I’d think about it. I wanted to see what you would do first though.”
“Look. If you want to go see her for Thanksgiving, be my guest. I don’t mind. I have no reason to go there. She made herself pretty clear about how she felt with what I’m doing. I’m not part of the family as long as I keep doing what I’m doing. But listen, you go. It’s fine with me.”
Amanda seemed to mull on that for a few seconds. “I don’t see what her problem is with what you do as long as you do well at it. But if it’s all the same, I think….I think I’d rather spend it with you.”
Hearing that brought a smile to his face, a small one. He and his sister had always been very close growing up, especially as they were the only constants in one another’s lives since their parents were often busy working and traveling. “I mean…I wasn’t really planning on doing anything for it this year. But if you want to do something, I’ll order catering or something and we can have that. How’s that?”
The idea seemed to please his sister as Amanda nodded her head. “See there? Now that’s already a much better offer, as far as I’m concerned. We’ll do that then.”
“Cool.” He replied before pulling off his socks. “Hit the light on your way out, would you? And lock the door after you’re doing watching…whatever reality garbage is on Discovery.”
“90 Day Fiance is not garbage.” She said flatly before reaching up to hit the light switch. “Oh yeah, I almost forgot to tell you. My apartment building is being sold, and I’m gonna need a place to stay for a little while. Night!” She closed the door quickly as soon as she finished saying it.
“Wait, what?”
