After leaving Los Angeles, Kevin had sent Samantha Tolson a direct message asking what hospital that her boyfriend was staying in. He redirected his flight home to take him into town to go see Jace a little while before he was discharged from the hospital. He knew the issues between the Aces and Madison and Sally, but he’d learned a long time ago to stay out of other people’s business unless he was asked. Besides, he considered Jace a friend at the end of the day. And he didn’t have a lot of friends in this business.
After leaving the hospital, he headed back to the airport to catch his flight back home to Atlantic City. He’d missed the place, and was glad that the smoke and haze had finally cleared out. After taking a seat at his terminal, his phone began to ring. It was his sister, Amanda. He found his Bluetooth earpiece and put in before answering the call.
“Hey, sis. How’s everything?”
“It’s great being able to go outside again without a mask on.” She answered. After coming to see him after being abused by her now ex-boyfriend, Amanda had been getting on with her life. She had moved back into her apartment, had seen no sign of her abusive ex-boyfriend, and was taking her time on getting back into dating again. “I wanted to ask you if you had any plans for this weekend.”
“None” He answered quietly. This was going to be Father’s Day weekend, and very few knew that he lost his father late last year. It wasn’t anything he put on social media, and told virtually no one about it. “I don’t have a plan to do much of anything except stay home and do whatever I want.”
“You don’t want to go see his grave? I bought some flowers to put on it, I thought we could go there together on Sunday.” Amanda told him. Growing up, she was always the apple of their father’s eye. She was far closer to him. Kevin’s father didn’t approve of him getting into the wrestling business. When he did it full time, their relationship had changed and became less familial and more business-like. Hugs became handshakes between them.
“I’m gonna pass on that. I went to the funeral and that was hard enough. I’d rather not go see his grave. Besides you know how I feel. I don’t think the person we knew is still there. Just the body he inhabited during his life. I appreciate you asking though.” Kevin told her. He didn’t mind at all if she wanted to go, he just wasn’t interested.
“I guess it’ll just be Mom and I then.” Amanda said with a sigh. “I really wish you’d come with us. It might help you feel better, say what you need to say maybe.”
“There’s no point in talking to a plot, Amanda. He can’t hear it, and I’m really not upset about it anymore. He didn’t like what I chose to do, that’s his choice. He did things I didn’t like, the only difference is that I didn’t change how I treated him because of them.” Kevin answered. “”Go see the grave, leave your flowers. Have a safe drive, tell mom I’ll call her Friday like usual. Okay?”
“Okay. Have a safe flight home.” Amanda said before ending the call. Kevin took the earpiece out of his ear and looked down to the wallpaper on his phone. It was a picture of him and his dad the last time he remembered his dad being proud of him. After a few seconds, the screen timed out and went black.
Just like their relationship.
