It was a brisk Sunday evening in Denver, Colorado. The streets and different restaurants were kind of busy since this particular weekend was a long one thanks to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday. We shift over to the Izakaya Den restaurant on S. Pearl Street. Inside the place was packed to the gills with customers. This was one of the hot spots in Denver for Japanese cuisine. In a private area of the restaurant, we find Uprising stars Jace Parker Davidson and Samantha Tolson.
Jace was coming off of a match last night in Anaheim and made it back to Denver in the early morning. Samantha had just played in an LFL game where The Denver Dimes owned by Davidson took on The San Antonio Cowgirls. They had left the stadium an hour or so after the game was over. Made it home to freshen up and get dressed in clothing suitable for fine dining. And made their way here to catch a later dinner. Normally going out to eat wasn’t something that Davidson could convince Tolson to do six days out of seven. Tolson was very stubborn about her strict diet and maintaining her body and conditioning for active competition.
Davidson managed to get Tolson here since one it was close enough to Monday and two that this place was Vegetarian Friendly along with offering Vegan and Gluten Free options. Samantha was tired and sore from the game and Davidson was tired and sore from wrestling last night and spending more of the late/early hours traveling to be here today. Even so, both seemed to be in good spirits as they sat in their booth. The Denver Dimes won today in impressive fashion. The home opener ended in a 28 - 3 victory over the San Antonio Cowgirls. Samantha had ordered ice water to drink but Jace chose Whisky on the rocks. Jace was mindlessly swiping through his phone while holding conversation with Samantha.
“I take it you had an interesting night in California.” Tolson decided to broach the subject now that they were alone together in their booth.
“You mean the fact that I came home with one less Championship belt?” Jace replied in a humorous yet sarcastic way.
“That would be it, exactly.” Samantha nodded her head.
Jace took a deep breath then grabbed a hold of his glass of Whisky with his free hand.
“I could have retained that title and came home with it, but I didn’t not to.” Davidson answered in a cryptic fashion.
“What does that even mean?” Tolson inquired as she placed her elbows onto the table between them.
Jace took a sip from his glass as he thought about the best way to explain it.
“It was a tag team title and while it was nice holding three Championship belts at once. It just ended up being more trouble than it was worth.” Jace pauses a moment then shakes his head. “Not like having three belts but the fact that my partner was a less than optimal choice of a person to go on a long title reign with. It would be like you having to team with Britney Anders then try co-existing with her while being Champions.”
Tolson's eyes widen at the thought, but she nods her head.
“I would have ended up murdering her before we ever got to hold the titles for any decent amount of time.” Tolson mused.
Jace lowers his glass and points at Samantha.
“That’s exactly it. That was the situation that I was in. Only this idiot not only would cooperate with me, but he kept coming after me and another one of my titles. In the moment I made a business decision to let him get pinned so that we were no longer Champions. After that I blasted him with a shot to the back of the head with one of my titles and then stomped his head through the canvas.” There was a sense of satisfaction in Jace’s tone.
Samantha smirks a little bit as she takes a drink from her glass of ice water. She placed the glass back down rubs at her shoulder a little.
“Quite the game today, I think I might have tweaked my shoulder hitting Juliana Mendoza one too many times.” Tolson humble brags.
Davidson doesn’t really respond. He just keeps scrolling through his phone as Samantha raises an eyebrow.
“Is something wrong?” The concern in her voice was evident.
Jace raised his gaze from his phone over to Samantha. He took a moment to let his mind race to a suitable response to that question. He could have blamed his withdrawn demeanor on the fact that he lost a title last night, but she’d see right through that. What was on his mind was the fact that today was January 15th. The day held special significance to Davidson but hadn’t revealed to Tolson the details of the matter. This was before things got more in depth between the two of them outside of flirty Twitter interactions.
No one at the game today had any clue about what today meant outside of Madison. She only knew because she was there when it happened. She knew all too well how Jace would feel today of all days. It was fresh in her mind also and when she got a free moment to speak to Davidson privately, she made sure to check and see how he was holding up. She offered reassurance and someone to talk to even though the current issues between her and Tolson were still at a fevered pitch.
Jace appreciated her concern but would rather not think about what today meant. He would have rather kept himself distracted and treated today like it was any other normal day. That was easier said than done and clearly Samantha was keying on the fact that Jace’s poker face was lacking. He cleared his throat and pasted on his best fake smile as he finally spoke.
“I’m fine, really. I’m just processing a lot of things in my head right now. Big things are happening for the STRONKUMMS LLC. The LFL is in full swing. I have to keep an eye on a tournament to crown a #1 contender to one of my titles. Not to mention I have to prepare myself for the match against Molly Hatchet at Frozen Fury.” He wasn’t COMPLETELY lying, just telling a half truth.
“You REALLY got under her skin.” Tolson added.
“It’s what I’m good at, apparently.” Jace shrugged. “People avoid me because I don’t sugar coat things or kiss anyone’s ass.”
Samantha smirks widely as Jace stops her before she can comment.
“Don’t even say it. Your ass is different, and you know it.” Jace admits which causes Tolson to grin devilishly. “The point is that I say the things that people don’t want to hear. I’m considered mean, a backstabber, toxic, and whatever other word you want to throw in there. Yet, nothing I said was a lie. I just stated the truth bluntly instead of patting Molly on the back while whispering sweet nothings into her ear about how she’s the greatest wrestler that ever lived. I choose cold hard facts over ego stroking 24/7.”
“Some people need that pat on the head and reassurance that we aren’t absolute failures. I know I’ve been guilty of that before, but I’ve been working on it.” Samantha says as she turns her head and wonders when their food will be delivered to the table.
Jace focuses back on his phone and continues to scroll until he finds something that makes him start to laugh.
“I see that there are rumors floating around that Molly Hatchet was spotted out in public recently with Griffin Hawkins. This should be quite amusing if true.” Jace was absolutely delighted by the online speculation which Samantha noticed out of the corner of her eye.
Tolson chose to remain quiet on the subject. She knew all too well just how Jace felt about Griffin Hawkins. She also was quite familiar with how Griffin Hawkins felt about Jace. It put in an awkward situation that she would much rather avoid. At least on Jace’s end he didn’t put her into a position where she had to pick sides. That didn’t however mean that he would bite his tongue his tongue when it came to Mr. Hawkins.
“Finally!” Samantha exclaimed louder than she meant to when she saw the waiter approaching their booth.
The waiter apologized for the wait then placed their order down in front of them. Jace looked up from his phone long enough to order a refill on his Whisky before the waiter left their table. Once the waiter made his way over to the bar to fill the request both Davidson and Tolson started to enjoy their meal and the rest of their evening.
